Art on the East Devon Way

A project to celebrate 25 years of the ‘East Devon Way’ long-distance walking route through the heart of the AONB. Poetry, painting and pin-hole cameras were just a few of the activities on offer, helping people of all ages to engage with the landscape in new and creative ways.

OVERVIEW

The East Devon Way walking route – now a key area of work for the AONB Team – was created in April 1993 by East Devon District Council, working in partnership with Devon County Council, local artists, photographers and landowners.

Since then the 40-mile route has enabled visitors of all ages – and from all over the world – to get closer to nature and explore the beautiful landscape of the East Devon AONB.

To celebrate 25yrs of the route, the AONB Partnership teamed up with Thelma Hulbert Gallery to facilitate a fantastic programme of creative events, focused on engaging a diverse range of people with the route and the surrounding landscape through the medium of art.

The programme included a range of workshops for families and adults, delivered alongside nature-based creative activities for community groups, primary and secondary schools.

The project culminated in an exhibition at the Thelma Hulbert Gallery reflecting on the workshops, together with new work created especially for the project by local contemporary artists Angus Rutherford, Gabby Hoad and Jenny Mellings.

PROJECT FUNDING

On behalf of the Art on the East Devon Way project Emma Molony and Anna Aroussi at the THG secured funding from the East Devon AONB Partnership, Tesco bags for help, Northbrook Community Fund, Parishes together Fund and the Arts Council.
